Frequently asked questions
A: As a new RV owner, it is crucial to maintain your vehicle to extend its lifespan and ensure safe travels. At SurfsUpRV, we recommend the following essential maintenance tips:
1. Regular Inspections: Conducting regular inspections can help identify and address potential issues before they become major problems. Make sure to check the roof, tires, and seals for any signs of wear or damage.
2. Tire Maintenance: Regularly check your tire pressure and ensure it meets the manufacturer's specification. RV tires usually "age out" before "wearing out". Tire depth is not a good indicator of condition for RVs. It's highly recommended to replace tires on RVs every 5-7 years. Proper tire maintenance is critical for safe driving and fuel efficiency.
3. Water System Care: Regularly sanitize your freshwater system to prevent contamination and ensure the water quality remains safe. Inspect hoses and connections for leaks, and replace worn-out seals to avoid water damage. Some RV hot water heaters have an anode rod that needs to be replaced each year. This stops the water heater rusting from the inside out. A $25 part can save you from replacing a $700+ water heater!
4. Battery Maintenance: RV batteries require regular maintenance to function properly. Check the water levels in lead-acid batteries monthly, and clean any corrosion from the terminals. Ensure the batteries are fully charged, especially during storage periods.
5. Roof and Seal Inspection: The roof of your RV is particularly susceptible to leaks, which can cause extensive damage over time. Inspect the roof and seals every few months, and apply a protective sealant if necessary. SurfsUpRV can assist with detailed roof inspections and repairs.
6. HVAC System Maintenance: Clean and replace air filters regularly to maintain proper airflow and efficiency of your heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems. Regular cleaning of the vents can also prevent dust and debris buildup. The AC coils should be properly cleaned every year to prevent wear and maintain efficient cooling, as well as the spread of mold.
7. Brake System Check: Regularly inspect your RV’s braking system for wear and tear. This includes checking the brake pads, rotors, and fluid levels if applicable. Brakes are essential for safe travel, and any signs of issues should be addressed immediately.
At SurfsUpRV, we are dedicated to providing top-notch repair and maintenance services to keep your vehicle in excellent shape. If you have any further questions or need professional assistance, feel free to contact us!
A: It's best to inspect your RV every 6–12 months, or before and after long trips. Focus on roof seals, tires, brakes, fluids, and appliances.
A: Inspect and reseal the roof, windows, and seams regularly. Store your RV properly and fix any leaks immediately.
A: Before every trip and monthly during storage. RV tires lose pressure over time, and incorrect pressure can lead to blowouts. The tire should be inflated to the pressure on the vin tag of the RV, NOT the pressure on the tire.
A: Yes. RV tires typically need replacement every 5–7 years, even if tread looks good. Check the DOT date on the tire sidewall for manufacturing date.
To keep your RV batteries in top shape, check water levels monthly (if lead-acid), clean any corrosion, and ensure they are fully charged, especially during storage.
